Read the crew chip

Find out who is aboard, how close they are to passing out, and how much food is left, without leaving the flight.

Use this in the air whenever the chip at the top left changes colour, or before a hard burn when you want to know how much load the crew will take.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Look at the top left, under the altitude. With one Meek aboard the chip is a face, their name, and one line under it.
The flight screen on the pad with a crew chip at the top left: a face, the name Oru Venn, and the line ASTRONAUT · 6.4 G · 19 d food.
One aboard. The second line is the trade, the load they black out past, and the food left.
  2. Read the second line. In ordinary flight it names the trade, then the G they stay awake through, then the days of food aboard. Anything else and it has been replaced by a state, in capitals, in a colour.
  3. Tap the chip if it is a row of faces. With more than one Meek aboard the chip folds to faces alone, pilot first, so it does not fill the column.
The flight screen with three round faces in a row at the top left in place of a name and state line.
Folded. Three aboard, pilot on the left.
  4. Read the lines, then tap again to fold it back. Expanded, it is one face, name and state line per Meek, in seat order behind the pilot.
The crew chip expanded into three rows, each with a face, a name and a state line, partly behind an achievement toast.
Expanded. Each row is one Meek, with their own state; here an achievement toast is over the top two.

What the state line says

LineColourWhat it means
ASTRONAUT · 6.4 G · 19 d foodgreyOrdinary. Their trade, the load they black out past, and how long the ship's food lasts everybody eating.
PANICKING · 6.4 GamberWithin two G of their own limit. The world is already darkening at the edges. Ease off.
PASSED OUTredOut cold. If it is the pilot, the ship's controls are dead until they come to.
BRACING FOR IMPACTamberThe ship is coming down faster than 100 m/s with under a minute of ground left. Everyone aboard shows this.
HUNGRY · 0.4 d foodamberUnder a day of food left on the whole ship. When it runs out, everyone eating from it is lost.
SAFE DESCENTgreenComing down under an open canopy, slow enough that every part aboard would survive the landing.
EXCITEDgreenThey have just done something they had never done before. It lasts twenty seconds.
LOSTredThey died aboard. Their face stays on the chip, dimmed, for the rest of the flight.

What you should see

The chip's outline takes the worst state aboard, so it goes amber if any one of them is panicking or hungry and red if any one of them is out or lost, whatever the others are doing. The faces change with the state as well: they wear their trade's working face while you are flying the ship, and their own expression when their body is in trouble.

Heads up
The food figure is for the whole ship, not for one seat. Food reaches every seat aboard through the joints, so a cabin eats from the pod's larder as readily as its own, and one number covers everybody.
